Fresh off the announcement that the BIG3 will get underway at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 25th, the professional 3-on-3 league has announced another big name acquisition with the signing of the legendary Julius “Dr. J” Erving as a coach. Erving will round out the league’s eight team coaches, joining the ranks of Allen Iverson, Charles Oakley, Gary Payton, George Gervin, Clyde Drexler, Rick Barry, and Rick Mahorn.
The addition of Dr. J to the BIG3 further solidifies the star power and authenticity the league brings to the basketball world. In just three short months BIG3 has secured its eight coaches as well as some of the best NBA players of all time including, Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, Jason Williams, Corey Maggette, Mike Bibby, Rashard Lewis, Jermaine O’Neal, Kenyon Martin, Al Harrington, Stephen Jackson, Bonzi Wells, Ricky Davis, Dermarr Johnson and more to be announced.
Dr. J may be best known as the godfather of the slam dunk and for his innovative high-flying artistry that pioneered a new style of play. During his career, Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the NBA's Brooklyn Nets) and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. He retired following the 1986-87 season, as the third highest scorer in pro basketball history. In 1993 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The BIG3, which was founded by producer, actor and music legend Ice Cube, and entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz, will tip off Sunday, June 25th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY with former Deputy Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association, Roger Mason Jr. at the helm as President & Commissioner.

Added Founder Ice Cube, “This is an extraordinary moment for BIG3. In securing Dr. J as a coach, we have brought on one of the most iconic basketball players in history. I cannot wait to see him coach these basketball legends.”

Brooklyn will be the first stop in the 10 week season, that will bring exhilarating 3-on-3 basketball played by some of the game’s most revered names to a different city each weekend this summer. All four games will take place on the same day in the same venue, so that fans will be able to see all of their favorite NBA superstars at one time.
