“Think You Got What it Takes?” Ice Cube on Talib Kweli’s Podcast On Season 4 Open Tryouts And More
By Oliver Maroney February 6, 2020
From the new rules and Fireball3 to hip-hop and culture, Ice Cube went on Talib Kweli’s podcast for a wide-ranging and insightful interview. Lots of BIG3 topics were discussed including how the league formed, the new rules initiated for season four and the new open tryouts.
On the topic of open tryouts, Cube and Kweli discussed how impactful it could be if someone made it through to the league.
“You don’t have to have NBA, overseas or professional experience,” Cube said on the show. “If you do your thing at our tryouts, you get an invitation to our combine. And that’s where all the ball players are, at the combine. You do your thing at our combine, you’ll have a chance to get picked. So it’s really opening the door up for any diamonds in the rough.”
Kweli responded saying “You could be a fan.” As Cube alluded to earlier in the conversation with Kweli, the league is built for the fans. So Kweli continued, “You built this thing for the fans. What would the fans want? They would want to say, ‘Hey, I can play.'”
So that’s what we’ve done. Included in our new season four announcements, we’re allowing anyone over the age of 22 to tryout. In the podcast, Kweli and Cube toss around the idea of possible two-sport athletes like football players and maybe some of the hip-hop artists that hoop in the summer with other professional players.
“If you think you got what it takes,” Cube said to Kweli. “And I doubt you do. But, if you think you do! Come show us what you got.”
