Josh Smith joined the BIG3 as co-captain of the 2019 expansion team Bivouac, helping the team to a fifth-place finish and emerging as one of the most productive defensive players in the league. Smith will be reassuming his co-captain title with Bivouac this year.
In 2019, Smith’s first season, he was a menace in the paint. With a season total of 60 rebounds and an average of 7.5 rebounds per game (consistent with his 7.4 rpg average in the NBA), Smith ranked in the league’s top four in both metrics. He also came in sixth in total steals (6) and fourth in total blocks (8).
Smith was born in College Park, Georgia, where he grew up. He eventually transferred to Oak Hill Academy and became a McDonald’s All-American.
Smith is a strong, powerful and imposing player with a wide variety of post-moves and offensive versatility. The former 2004 first-round pick played in the NBA for 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks with Triplets player Joe Johnson, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans. Over his NBA career he averaged 14.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, and he was the youngest player in the NBA to record 10 blocked shots in a game.
