Welcome to Week 3 of the Summer of Fire. All six BIG3 games this week will take place on Saturday, so make sure to mark your calendars. As always, we’ve got a great slate of games:
GAME 1 ON CBS:
GAME 1 (3:00 EDT on CBS): 3 HEADED MONSTERS (1-2) VS. TRILOGY (1-2)
This game features the biggest stakes of any other game you’ll see this week. 3 Headed Monsters have been perhaps the most consistent performers in the history of the BIG3. Trilogy have won three of the six Championships in BIG3 history, including the last two. Both teams essentially find themselves fighting for their playoff lives this week. It’s not impossible for a 1-3 team to make the BIG3 playoffs, but the odds certainly aren’t good.
Trilogy have dropped their past two games, although in their defense they’ve been up against Power and Triplets, two of the best teams in the league. 3HM’s problems seem more immediate – their offense has looked sluggish as they’ve reintegrated Reggie Evans, and more importantly 2022 BIG3 MVP Kevin Murphy could miss time with an apparent knee injury. This should be a battle for survival between two of the best teams in BIG3 history.
GAME 2 (4:00 on CBS): 3’S COMPANY (1-2) VS. TRIPLETS (2-1)
3’s Company will look to build on their performance from last week, where they were able to pick up their first win of the year by showing more offensive flow and ball movement than they did in the previous two weeks of the season. They got some nice contributions from new addition Tony Allen, who made six NBA All-Defense teams during his time in the league.
Allen (who will be returning to the FedEx Forum in Memphis on Saturday) and the rest of the team will be put to the test in Week 4, because they’ll be going up against Joe Johnson, Jannero Pargo, and the Triplets. The Triplets have looked like the class of the league recently –
not only is two-time league MVP Joe Johnson back in form, but Jeremy Pargo has been absolutely spectacular recently, and has actually been an MVP candidate in his own right at this point in the season. We’ll see if Allen, Beasley, and the rest of 3’s Company will be able to slow down Triplets’ dynamic duo.
GAME 3 (5:00 on BIG3.COM): BALL HOGS (2-1) VS. POWER (2-1)
This should be an absolutely fantastic game. Not only do Ball Hogs and Power look like two of the league’s best teams, but they’re also two of the most fun teams in the league to watch. They feature constant ball movement and man movement, and have skill at every position. Power’s blend of skill and size are unmatched, whereas the Ball Hogs get it done with skill, speed, and shooting, and that battle of styles should make for an unforgettable matchup.
GAME 4 (5:50 on BIG3.COM): GHOST BALLERS (2-1) VS. TRI STATE (2-1)
This is another battle between two teams who have had success playing slightly different styles. The Ghost Ballers can make shots from the perimeter and share the ball, but find their most success when they can use their size and one-on-one skills to bully their opponents into submission. Tri State can bang inside and have some good isolation scorers, but have their most success when they’re sharing the ball and knocking down shots from the perimeter. One thing to keep an eye on will be if early-season MVP favorite Jason Richardson, who had a bit of a down game when Tri State lost its first game of the season in Week 3, can have a bounce-back performance.
GAME 5 (6:40 on BIG3.COM): BIVOUAC (2-1) VS. KILLER 3’S (2-1)
This should be a battle between two of the best defensive teams in the league. Bivouac has had trouble throughout the season finding consistent offense outside of quick-trigger threes off of rebounds, although they did get some strong offensive production from Garlon Green in Week 3. The Killer 3’s continue to be one of the more consistent teams in the league, as Frank Nitty never stops creating for himself and others on offense or hunting the ball on defense or in rebounding situations. Killer 3’s got a phenomenal scoring performance from Donte Greene in Week 3, so we’ll see if he can keep that going against Bivouac.
GAME 6 (7:30 on BIG3.COM): ENEMIES (1-2) VS. ALIENS (0-3)
Expect to see the Enemies come out with their usual combination of length and perimeter shot-making, and the return of center Isaiah Austin should greatly help them inside. The real question going into this game is whether the Aliens will be able to pull themselves out of their malaise. After looking like the best passing team in the league for much of last season, the Aliens have struggled mightily on that end in 2023, with almost all of their offense coming in the form of contested jumpers by Dusan Bulut or Janis Timma. Their answer may come in the form of German-born guard Kostja Mushidi, whom the team added in the offseason and will be making his BIG3 debut this week.
