Welcome to Week 5 of the Summer of Fire. All six BIG3 games this week will take place on Sunday, so make sure to mark your calendars. As always, we’ve got a great slate of games:
GAME 1 (3:00 EDT on CBS): KILLER 3’S (3-1) VS. ENEMIES (2-2)
The perimeter matchup between Jordan Crawford and Franklin “Frank Nitty” Session is going to be an absolute delight to watch. Crawford, who is currently leading the league in scoring while shooting 55% from the floor and 64.7% from three, is the league’s best scoring guard. Frank Nitty, who’s currently third in the league in assists and sports an unreal 7.5:1 assist to turnover ratio, is arguably the best playmaking guard in the league.
Both players are incredibly talented, but use their gifts in different ways: Crawford looks to get to his spots and launch a long jumper, while Frank Nitty looks to break down the defense with his handle and either get all the way to the rim or force the defense to leave a teammate open – when that happens, he’ll invariably hit said teammate with a perfect pass. Don’t skip this one.
GAME 2 (4:00 on CBS): POWER (3-1) VS. GHOST BALLERS (3-1)
Huge game between two of the best teams in the league. If you like skilled big men, this is the game for you. Will Darnell Jackson and Chris Johnson’s combination of size and sweet shooting win out, or will the passing and movement of TJ Cline and Royce White carry the day? It will certainly be exciting to find out. The winner of this game will have an inside track to a playoff spot, so there’s a lot at stake here.
GAME 3 (5:00 on BIG3.COM): BIVOUAC (2-2) VS. 3’S COMPANY (1-3)
Both of these teams could really use this win. If 3’s Company loses, their hopes of making the playoffs will be extremely slim. Bivouac, meanwhile, desperately needs to bounce back from the
50-24 loss they suffered in Week 4. Both teams need to find more consistent sources of offense – Bivouac needs to stop settling for long jumpers, and 3’s Company needs to curb its reliance on Michael Beasley. Which team will make the right adjustments?
GAME 4 (5:50 on BIG3.COM): 3 HEADED MONSTERS (1-3) VS. BALL HOGS (2-2)
This is almost a must-win game for the Ball Hogs. Rick Barry’s team have played as well as any team in the league, but have been on the wrong side of two extremely close losses. If they want to guarantee a spot in the playoffs, they’ll likely have to win out.
That starts with a win over the 3 Headed Monsters, who have had a disaster of a season – if Reggie Theus’ team wants to maintain a hope of making the playoffs, they’ll need to beat the Ball Hogs, but that won’t be an easy task if the Ball Hogs play the way they did in the first half of the season.
GAME 5 (6:40 on BIG3.COM): TRI STATE (2-2) VS. TRILOGY (2-2)
This is probably the game with the highest stakes of the week. Jason Richardson’s Tri State has the talent to win it all, and Trilogy are looking for a three-peat. Whichever team loses this game will be on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, which is crazy to think about for two teams this good.
Pay attention to whether Tri State can find their touch from beyond the arc after a rough 3-point shooting performance in Week 4, and whether Trilogy guard Ryan “Hezi God” Carter can follow up his Week 4 performance, which earned him the Microsoft Player of the Week Award.
GAME 6 (7:30 on BIG3.COM): TRIPLETS (3-1) VS. ALIENS (0-4)
This would be a major upset for Aliens. The Triplets, led by Jannero Pargo and two-time MVP Joe Johnson, look as good as any team in the league. Meanwhile, the Aliens are currently the league’s only winless squad. If Triplets can keep their focus, they should come away with the win, but anything can happen in the BIG3. If they don’t take care of business in this game, it could have a major impact come playoff time. That’s one of the things that’s so great about this league – every single game matters.
