Mitchell spent four years at Virginia, and was named to the ACC All-Defensive team his senior year. He’s spent time in the G-League and played in Europe, New Zealand, Israel, and Puerto Rico.
Mitchell is, simply put, a menace at the basket. He’s remarkably nimble for a guy his size, and that allows him to get where he wants in the paint without running into a defender or committing a travel. He gets off the ground quickly, he gets very far off the ground, and when he leaves the ground it’s usually because he’s trying to dunk. Once he gets the ball in the immediate basket area, there’s not much the defense can do.
Mitchell knows how good he is when he gets it down low, and is constantly trying to create opportunities for himself at the rim. When he’s in the “dunker’s spot,” he’s constantly moving to create angles for his teammates to get him the ball or set him up with a lob. After he sets a pick, he rolls to the basket with a purpose, often catching defenses before they have a chance to rotate back to him. He’s relentless on the offensive glass.
I really like his fit with Power, who prefer to use ball movement to slice defenses apart instead of stretching them past their breaking point with a barrage of shots from beyond the arc. Nancy Lieberman, fresh off taking Power to the BIG3 Championship game, has made Mitchell a Co-Captain already, so she clearly sees something. It’ll be exciting to see what happens when Mitchell plays with all of the fantastic playmakers on the Power roster.
