Joe Johnson secured back-to-back MVP honors following a record-breaking season.
Iso Joe broke the BIG3 single season scoring record with 182 points (an average of 22.8 points per game, more than a full point ahead of second place). The MVP season from Iso Joe led the Triplets to a 6-2 regular season record.
In week one, Johnson had a double double with 27 points and 12 rebounds while leading the Triplets to their first win of the season. His week one performance earned Johnson his first Microsoft Player of the Week honor of the season, ultimately winning four throughout the season.
Johnson had a record-breaking performance in week two where he broke the single game scoring record with 34 points in the win against Power.
Starting the season with five straight 20 plus point games leading the Triplets to a 5-0 record, it became very clear later in the season that the Triplets needed Johnson to have big games in order for them to win. The Triplets won one regular season game when Joe didn’t hit the 20-point mark. One on one, he could not be stopped, leading opposing teams to start double teaming him.
In week 8, Tri State double-teamed Johnson forcing his teammates to make shots proving effective with a Tri State victory over the Triplets, an uncommon defensive decision in Fireball3. After the strategy proved effective, it continued into the playoffs and the results spoke for themselves.
Johnson was also second in both rebounds and assists finishing behind Reggie Evans and Leandro Barbosa, respectively.
When speaking about Joe Johnson winning the MVP for a second consecutive year, 14-year NBA veteran and commentator, Jim Jackson had high praise for the MVP.
“It’s the ultimate sign of respect because the coaches and players vote on it, so Joe Johnson to be able to win it two years in a row says a lot about not only his game, but the respect level that the players and coaches have for him,”Jackson said.
Even though Joe Johnson and the Triplets didn’t make the championship, there was no question who the MVP was this season.
